Directly connected to Galicia's musical history of the last century, XISTRA DE CORUXO first appeared on the scene in 1988 with the intention of studying, sharing, and updating the melodies that, in other times, made up an important part of the enjoyment and feeling of the people of the southern part of Galicia.

XISTRA DE CORUXO have been classified as the group that best represents the evolution of traditional Galician music as well as the group which offers the most innovation within its repertoire; this is due primarily to its very rich archive of field recordings made in the last 17 years by Xerardo F. Santomé. The XISTRA "product" is dance music of a kind that turns its live performances into a genuine incitement to the "troula", to a Galician party, and to the enjoyment of more than 20 different rhythms played by 6 musicians employing a total of 25 musical instruments.

Throughout its artistic career, XISTRA DE CORUXO have performed throughout Galicia and Northern Portugal and in nearly every province of Spain. Since 1995, they have been going on one or two tours of Europe annually. These tours have included such countries as France, Germany, Chequia and Croatia, among others.

Currently, all of the members of XISTRA DE CORUXO are actively involved with other musical groups and music schools in the southern part of the province of Pontevedra. These include, among others, the Etnográfico "A Buxaina," the Centro Cultural de Coruxo, the "Corisco" Association, the Neighborhood Association of Sárdoma, all of which are located in Vigo. The members are also associated with groups outside of Vigo such as "Charviscas" from Moaña, Atios from Salvaterra, Rebordáns from Tui, and Donas from Gondomar.
